Book Review: CHETAN BHAGAT

Image
One night at a Call Centre was Chetan Bhagat’s second book and the first among his works that I read. It was probably well-received by the readers and got Bhagat his now-huge fan-base as he was one of the few Indian writers who made his story so effortlessly believable as he took on reality through fiction. That definitely went down well with the readers, as this was the first time where an author spoke from the heart through his characters, about the things the youth connected with. From the lucid language used to the associable daily-life descriptions in his debut novel, Bhagat struck the right chord with Young India. The “call from God” at the end of the book dint provide for a strong and appreciable close, but he had already done enough to win the hearts of several thousand young, modern Indians. His first book (and by far his best book) was Five Point Someone. Because it wasn’t about some regular love story or a depressing suicide attempt. It was realistic, a unique concept in te

[UNTITLED]

(This post cannot be described by any amount of words, big or small, or even pictures-the pain in the eyes of the people of Mumbai will tell you better that I’m trying to echo the sentiments of my fellowmen and hence remains untilted as no word(s) will do justice to how we feel.) A terrorist, one year,an almost dead trial, one lousy ‘system’,some heroes, hundreds of lives,a few thousand shaken beliefs, some controversies, a few leads, millions of rupees, a zillion tears………pretty much where Mumbai stands on 26/11/2009,exactly a year after the horrific terror attack. It would be an understatement to say that it shook the city…I believe the soul of the city was raped. It took almost 3 entire days to wrap up the operations and rescue the remaining few people they could save from the fangs of death in the hands of the terrorists. And then it begun: The funerals, the monetary compensations, the blame-games,the finger pointing, the candle light peace marches, the vast media coverage, the controversie

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!

Image
“………We are the champions my friends,   ........No time for losers ‘coz we are the champions,of the world”.                                                                                                           -Queen   The world champions are back with a bang! With an emphatic win   over the   English in the One-Day tourney and a smooth sailing win in the Champions Trophy 2009,the Aussies have silenced their critics who wrote them off ,calling it the beginning of the end of their dominance after their Ashes defeat for the second time in a row on English soil under the leadership of Ricky Ponting, regarded the most successful Australian Captain of all time. A team which had to start almost from scratch after legends like Steve Waugh, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist,Mathhew Hayden,Justin Langer, who, almost simultaneously decided to hang up their boots ,leaving the position of the world champions in the international rankings in   grave doubt, proved their prowess in th

Book Review:STEPHENIE MAYER

Image
[Warning:Spoiler Ahead] When you fall in love with a vampire..... Jeez,it sounds pretty creepy....but not when the vamp in question is Edward Cullen.Stephenie Mayer has made the horror of being with a vampire one of the most sought-after prospects in the world of romance through her books which starts off with Twilight, followed by New Moon ,Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. This entire series is a romantic fantasy which will leave every hopeless romantic even more hopeless and craving for more. The romance between Edward Cullen and Isabella Swann is compelling, tormenting and passionate. Twilight got this series off to an interesting start with its   fairytale romance. New Moon further built on that with Bella and Edward’s   painful separation and subsequent happy reunion and her newfound feelings for werewolf Jacob Black. As a result Eclipse was a different novel – it was Bella’s crazy emotions and actions and Edward’s hopes of taking their love to greater heights.   Breaking Dawn is similar

FAREWELL,KING OF POP

Image
Acres of newsprint is being devoted to the sudden passing away of Michael Jackson, the iconic pop sensation of the 80’s.Frankly, I'm not a big fan but like most people world over,I agree that he is irreplaceable .His life was, like that of most people in the entertainment industry, filled with controversies starting from his change of skin color to his horribly gone-wrong plastic surgery,to his failed marriages,to the child molestation accusations,to his holding his baby by the window railing and now to the cause of his death and the huge debts .But beyond all this, the true fan following for his unique artistry as a musician and entertainer ceases to fade away. The MJ songs which I love the most include Billie Jean,Black or White,Heal the World,Dirty Diana,P.Y.T& Beat It. One thing is for sure, the music, the magic and the madness of Michael “Whacko Jacko”Jackson will live on forever. R.I.P  MJ.

THE POISONOUS MUSHROOM

Background: This story comes from Der Giftpilz , an anti-Semitic children's book published by Julius Streicher , the publisher of Der Stürmer . He was executed as a war criminal in 1946. This summary and partial translation is taken from a 1938 publication issued by the "Friends of Europe" in London, an organization to which I have not been able to find a successor to request permission to reprint. A mother and her young boy are gathering mushrooms in the German forest. The boy finds some poisonous ones. The mother explains that there are good mushrooms and poisonous ones, and, as they go home, says:"Look, Franz, human beings in this world are like the mushrooms in the forest. There are good mushrooms and there are good people. There are poisonous, bad mushrooms and there are bad people. And we have to be on our guard against bad people just as we have to be on guard against poisonous mushrooms. Do you understand that?" "Yes, mother," Franz replies. &q

BEACH CRICKET

Image
When there’s absolutely nothing to do, the automatic next resort to some entertainment is the idiot box. I was really bored one summer afternoon and I used this resort to help kill my boredom. There weren’t any good flicks or good music,shows,etc..so I was surfing through the sports channels when I came across a totally new version of cricket called beach cricket. It felt kinda weird not seeing the conventional grass but sand in its place and the players in shorts and tees and not their usual jerseys. The strangest part of course, was the yellow colored plastic pitch!! The match was between Australia and South Africa and most of the players are former players who’ve retired from international cricket .South Africa won the match. During some county matches in England, the commentators sometimes converse with the fieldsmen when the match is in progress. But in this game, they actually give the microphone to the batsman on strike and talk to them! I personally feel this could be highly d

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Image
Well, its World Environment Day and I’m all for going green. So,what did I do??Nothing great, just thought I’d post this little something I’d written for a friend a couple of months back. When I first wrote it for my friend for her university project, she just absolutely loved it. So I saved it and thought it was the most relevant thing to post. So,am I implementing it daily in my life?Well,im really trying hard to. Hope the person reading it too finds it necessary to seriously think  about and help save our beautiful planet EARTH!!  A day in my life could be described somewhat like this: • I wake up in the morning and brush my teeth and leave the tap running while brushing and turn it off only when I’m done. • I realize, I was in the shower for too long, shampooing my hair, consequence of which is that I ‘v my missed my bus to college and I'm running late in so I’ve asked my dad to drop me. • Its my turn to take out the garbage today and as I’m already late I don’t separate the

Book Review : KHALED HOSSEINI

Image
K haled Hosseini,Afghan-American writer is renowned for his two bestselling books, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.I’v read both and I must admit, I absolutely loved his works. It paints a soulful, emotional and touching journey of the people of Afghanistan woven in a fabric of simple yet compelling words which brings out the fact that the basic emotions of love, patriotism, jealously, fear, passion, freindiship, pain etc. exist even in a country with which sadly nowadays one associates only war and they have been wonderfully captivated by Hosseini. Of course, he has brought out the reality of the actual turmoil in a small sense. Kite Runner is about a rich kid who moves to the US of A during his growing years because the Taliban take over his homeland .It mainly describes his life pre and post Taliban; first in Afghanistan with his friend and next; finding love in America and the life changing event that occurs in-between the geographical and emotional shift and also his

IPL-2

Image
I PL:One of the biggest business ventures of our times and by far the biggest crowd puller is an Indian venture. Probably the biggest draw in the entertainment industry in terms of the soaring TRP’s.Credit for this doesn’t just lie in the game itself, as the big Bollywood connection exists. But with the money, glitz and glamour come the controversies. Firstly ,its NOT being played in INDIA.. A Very un-Indian thing if u’d ask me. So these people just can reschedule the matches to a later part of the year??Would it kill them to wait?? These money hungry people deem that a Loksabha election is less important than a game which is a commercial business ,that buys and auctions players, literally. What’s so Indian left in it if the home crowds don’t get a chance to see it? That’s precisely why they shouldn’t be calling the teams Mumbai,Chennai,Delhi etc.. from now on ,they should have the names of the cities where they choose to host it ,say the most dissappointed, patriotic fans. The competiti

KRIS ALLEN V/S ADAM LAMBERT

Image
So it came down to the rocker and the dark horse. And many people thought that it was gonna be Adam who would crowned American Idol 2009 as he would win it hands down because of his popularity. But America is getting less predictable by the day; they are making different choices than you normally expect them to.(Electing an African American president for starters) The competition was not one of the toughest ever if you’d ask me coz maybe even I thought Adam Lambert was gonna win bcoz I liked him more than Kris, but I guess America had already been hinting otherwise since the last couple of weeks before the finals. Kris was the one who was in the top 3 with the maximum number of votes; and the difference between him and Adam during the top 3 when Danny Gokey got eliminated was 1 million votes if im not mistaken. Guess America wants the usual mellow -ballad-singing-pop singer as their idol. Either they are bored of rock or maybe Adam’s sexual preferences just let the girls down and

ADAM LAMBERT

Image
Whoa baby! Has America found a rocker or what through AI-8??Adam Lambert has got it all-the looks, the voice, the hair, the style….all in all a very hot package. Hardly ever can you see him without his trademark black nail polish(yeah,im not kidding) & Iv gotta admit, Lambert is the first GUY on this planet I can not only accept that with, but also love to see nail polish on; and I actually miss it when he’s not wearing it!! And about the singing, I guess his theatrical music background helps, but really, this guy has some crazy talent. He literally sticks his tongue out when he hits the high note(and boy can he hit that well)and its wonderful to hear him scream it like that. And the best part about his vocal ability is that not only can he sing rock, he can sing a ballad brilliantly and get the audience up on their feet coz he has this amazing ability to make the song his trademark Adam Lambert- thing and just woo people. And not only does he surprise you with his performances, h

BRETT LEE

Image
He’s blonde and he’s Aussie. That’s enough to make the girls swoon.Well,it was more than enough to make me swoon;)And I’m not ashamed to admit that iv had the biggest crush on him for a long time. Saw him for the first time on TV in a series v/s England in 2002.Immediately, I thought he was the cutest guy who existed on the planet at the time(And that view hasn ’t actually changed much).Of course, I was just beginning to watch and like cricket, and at the age of twelve, I dint think anybody could play better cricket than Australia(this view hasn ’t changed either) and the fact that Brett lee was on their team and was doing fairly well only helped increase my loyalty and fan following. ' Binga ',as his teammates call him is the most delirious when he takes a wicket ;the cue for him to hurtle forward ,leap high and swing low, down on to his haunches, pumping his fist like he’s starting a lawnmower. But his kind of joy is not conditional on success: it’s ever present. You can

ADAM GILCHRIST

Image
Adam Gilchrist is a phenomenon. While the Aussie’s methods with the willow are exhilarating, his work with the gloves is safe. The statistics speak for themselves. Any cricketer who can make such a serious impact in all forms of the game with the willow is certainly special. This bloke is influential, both as a lower middle order batsmen in tests ,where he has go the Aussies out of tight spots time and again and that too at staggering scoring rates ,and also in the ODI’s where he sets the tempo as a opener and often progresses to much bigger things.T20 of course, needless to say, was tailor –made for him. I admire and respect him as a sportsman and above all as a person. His spirit of sportsmanship shone through when he ‘walked’in the semifinals of the 2003 World Cup. Beyond doubt,’Gilly’,as he is fondly known, is the finest wicket keeper-batsmen to have played the gentleman’s game. His words before the tsunami relief game in Melbourne should throw light on the man.” It shouldn’t take
