Book Review:STEPHENIE MAYER

[Warning:Spoiler Ahead]

When you fall in love with a vampire.....

Jeez,it sounds pretty creepy....but not when the vamp in question is Edward Cullen.Stephenie Mayer has made the horror of being with a vampire one of the most sought-after prospects in the world of romance through her books which starts off with Twilight, followed by New Moon ,Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. This entire series is a romantic fantasy which will leave every hopeless romantic even more hopeless and craving for more. The romance between Edward Cullen and Isabella Swann is compelling, tormenting and passionate.

Twilight got this series off to an interesting start with its  fairytale romance. New Moon further built on that with Bella and Edward’s  painful separation and subsequent happy reunion and her newfound feelings for werewolf Jacob Black.

As a result Eclipse was a different novel – it was Bella’s crazy emotions and actions and Edward’s hopes of taking their love to greater heights.  Breaking Dawn is similar. The romantic tension between Edward and Bella is at its peak– it is clear that whatever happens to them (death, Jacob, mutant vampire baby) their love is non-negotiable and this completely put me off; it was overly happy-ever-after –ish to the point where you close the book with a great degree of disappointment on the everything-worked-out-just fairytale-ishly-fine-for-Bella factor.

These books aren’t masterpieces of literary achievement, however. With regard to plot, character development, and quality of writing, J.K. Rowling’s series easily wins in each category. Although the concept of good vampires is unusual and intriguing, Edward’s perfection can be over-the-top, and often just made me roll my eyes (unlike some girls who just melted with his every move or word). When you read it as a realistic person, the fact that everything just works out for Bella is unbelievably annoying. Inspire of being such a Plain-Jane, how she manages to make  the most handsome and mysterious boy in school to fall in love with her remains a mystery and totally unbelievable. Her defining character trait (her only character trait without Edward) is her clumsiness. . Trying to decide what Bella was going to do with her life if she hadn’t met him is a difficult task, since she shows no real interest in any subject or activity, or even any interest in her “friends.” These are the instances where Meyer really disappoints you with her dull and lifeless character descriptions. And oh yeah,Reneesme(the name and character) pisses me off.

Every teenage girl wants a gorgeous, mysterious boy to fall in love with her for no reason, and then risk his life to protect her(and to literally be “THE Edward Cullen of her life”)and, Twilight dramatically personifies exactly that to the hilt. No wonder this series is a smash hit. And the fact that it is  Brit heartthrob Robert Pattinson  playing the role of Edward Cullen, only makes the girls go even more crazier. The series is undoubtedly a page turner and a  simple read, but for a believer in reality, its just is a huge let down.
