WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!

Image
“………We are the champions my friends,   ........No time for losers ‘coz we are the champions,of the world”.                                                                                                           -Queen   The world champions are back with a bang! With an emphatic win   over the   English in the One-Day tourney and a smooth sailing win in the Champions Trophy 2009,the Aussies have silenced their critics who wrote them off ,calling it the beginning of the end of their dominance after their Ashes defeat for the second time in a row on English soil under the leadership of Ricky Ponting, regarded the most successful Australian Captain of all time. A team which had to start almost from scratch after legends like Steve Waugh, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist,Mathhew Hayden,Justin Langer, who, almost simultaneously decided to hang up their boots ,leaving the position of the world champions in the international rankings in   grave doubt, proved their prowess in th...

BEACH CRICKET

Image
When there’s absolutely nothing to do, the automatic next resort to some entertainment is the idiot box. I was really bored one summer afternoon and I used this resort to help kill my boredom. There weren’t any good flicks or good music,shows,etc..so I was surfing through the sports channels when I came across a totally new version of cricket called beach cricket. It felt kinda weird not seeing the conventional grass but sand in its place and the players in shorts and tees and not their usual jerseys. The strangest part of course, was the yellow colored plastic pitch!! The match was between Australia and South Africa and most of the players are former players who’ve retired from international cricket .South Africa won the match. During some county matches in England, the commentators sometimes converse with the fieldsmen when the match is in progress. But in this game, they actually give the microphone to the batsman on strike and talk to them! I personally feel this could be highly d...

BRETT LEE

Image
He’s blonde and he’s Aussie. That’s enough to make the girls swoon.Well,it was more than enough to make me swoon;)And I’m not ashamed to admit that iv had the biggest crush on him for a long time. Saw him for the first time on TV in a series v/s England in 2002.Immediately, I thought he was the cutest guy who existed on the planet at the time(And that view hasn ’t actually changed much).Of course, I was just beginning to watch and like cricket, and at the age of twelve, I dint think anybody could play better cricket than Australia(this view hasn ’t changed either) and the fact that Brett lee was on their team and was doing fairly well only helped increase my loyalty and fan following. ' Binga ',as his teammates call him is the most delirious when he takes a wicket ;the cue for him to hurtle forward ,leap high and swing low, down on to his haunches, pumping his fist like he’s starting a lawnmower. But his kind of joy is not conditional on success: it’s ever present. You can...

ADAM GILCHRIST

Image
Adam Gilchrist is a phenomenon. While the Aussie’s methods with the willow are exhilarating, his work with the gloves is safe. The statistics speak for themselves. Any cricketer who can make such a serious impact in all forms of the game with the willow is certainly special. This bloke is influential, both as a lower middle order batsmen in tests ,where he has go the Aussies out of tight spots time and again and that too at staggering scoring rates ,and also in the ODI’s where he sets the tempo as a opener and often progresses to much bigger things.T20 of course, needless to say, was tailor –made for him. I admire and respect him as a sportsman and above all as a person. His spirit of sportsmanship shone through when he ‘walked’in the semifinals of the 2003 World Cup. Beyond doubt,’Gilly’,as he is fondly known, is the finest wicket keeper-batsmen to have played the gentleman’s game. His words before the tsunami relief game in Melbourne should throw light on the man.” It shouldn’t take ...
