GO AHEAD, SAVE THE TIGER :|

Acres of newsprint have and are still being devoted to the Tiger Woods story even in India. What is appalling is that when our country is facing an even graver threat of the possible extinction of its national animal, it is indeed heartbreaking that the wrong ‘Tiger’ gets wider coverage. The 'real' tiger’s missing stripes, sadly, get lesser attention.
At the turn of the 20th century, according to sources, India had an estimated 40,000 tigers in the wild. Tigers are threatened by a combination of poaching, habitat loss from development. In 2002, based on pug mark census, this number was 3,642. As per the monitoring exercise by Wildlife Institute of India in association with National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), Government of India using camera traps, in 2008 we were left with only 1,411 tigers.
There are more tigers in wildlife parks and zoos today than there are in the wild, which goes to prove how much support zoological parks provide for endangered species of the world. But as observed several times, all this exists only on paper. The shocking numbers alone tell you the story. And again, we must keep in mind, 1411 is just a number, which is subject to change. This number is so small the tigers will be gone soon if we don’t wake up to the crisis.
Several private co’s. are showing their more humane side by coming forward and pledging support. But one may obviously ask how such moves by them or anyone sitting at their homes and sending text messages or blogging about the crisis would help stop the poaching and work towards ensuring their survival??That question may probably not have a satisfactory answer. But you need not be a wildlife enthusiast to appreciate this wild beauty or to understand the gravity of the situation. Just ensuring that you will never be a reason for its extinction and by being an aware and alert individual and doing everything possible to spread the word about this issue is probably good enough an attempt to show your solidarity for the cause.
The Government must realize, at the earliest, that it’s our National Animal at stake. Saving the tiger is one of the crying needs of the hour. If serious corrective measures are taken and stricter laws are enforced to ensure their continued survival, we may just be lucky enough to save the remaining of these beautiful big cats, OUR NATIONAL PRIDE.
